SACHSEN, SAALE-UNSTRUT, BRANDENBURG | A PORTRAIT OF THE REGION
the past two years, looking to propel the
ancient estate forward. In doing so, they
can fall back on true vineyard treasure.
Their monopole, Gosecker
Dechantenberg, with its distinctive
sandstone walls, for instance, was first
documented a 1000 years ago – this turns
it into the oldest continuously-cultivated
vineyard of the region.
Lovers of vinous romanticism and scenery
are well-catered for along the rivers Saale,
Unstrut and Elbe. Historic, terraced vineyards
with tiny parcels? Tick! Everything
is here: from the Kaatschener Dachsberg
and Naumburger Steinmeister via the
previously mentioned Gosecker
Dechantenberg, the different parts of the
Freyburger Edelacker, the Radebeuler
Goldener Wagen all the way to the
Meissener Kapitelberg. And, speaking of
Sachsen, in which the latter two vineyards
are situated: tentative voices wanting to
join Breitengrad 51 can already be heard.
Another winemaking couple in
Burgscheidungen on the river Unstrut has
taken a completely different route.
Konrad Buddrus and Eva-Maria Wehner
with their aptly named mini-estate ‘Konni
All is done by hand: Eva-Maria Wehner and
Konrad Buddrus of Weingut Konni & Evi
make unfiltered, exciting natural wines
& Evi’. It was when he was still a
viticulture student in Franken’s
Veitshöchheim that Buddrus discovered
an ancient vineyard parcel for sale on
Ebay – from then onwards the couple
have forged ahead with burning passion
for their project. Right from the start they
farmed biodynamically in their tiny
