For years now, Thomas Haag has maintained
a breathtaking standard. The
2019 vintage merely adds another glorious
chapter to this saga. A move as brilliant
as the Himmelreich GG, accompanied by such
layered savouriness; an interplay of such ingeniously
refined minerality as the Doctor
Spätlese; and an aromatic explosion as complex
as the “Lange Goldkapsel” Helden Auslese
– that is great, great craft, thought through
in the most minute detail and executed with
well-versed precision and enormous passion.
It goes without saying that the “simpler labels”
are of extraordinary class!
96 2019 Graach Himmelreich Riesling GG
Ripe and also sublime nose with raisin, peach, spice, bay leaf
and even hints of Asian spices. Quite brilliant acidity with
traction and elegance leading lustily through the immaculately
contoured texture. Straightforward and elegant, good
complexity. 12,5 Vol.-%. cork, €€€
juice, luscious and very tightly integrated. Very long finish,
enormous potential. 7 Vol.-%. cork, €€€€

Smoky nose and concentrated, also hints of matchstick, yellow
fruit and herbs form in the background, but still rather
restrained. Taut, juicy, dense and elegant on the palate, determined
and straightforward, no Riesling classic, but plenty
of class. Young and talented. 12,5 Vol.-%. cork, €€€
97 2019 Bernkastel Doctor Riesling Spätlese
Mineral-spicy, dense on the nose, peach and pineapple fruit
scents with a hint of toffee. On the palate there are creamy
Spätlese motifs and lots of mineral interplay, juiciness, great
energy and a length that is again entirely embraced in minerality.
Great, noble and long-lasting. 7 Vol.-%. cork,

Niederberg Helden Riesling Auslese
Clear, rich yellow. On the nose honey, spice, ripe fruits, dried
apricot, dates, figs and hints of caramel. On the palate dense,
textural sweetness, with nuances of spice, honey and lime
92 2019 »Heldenstück« Lieser Riesling tr.
Slightly floral with orange blossom scents, spicy slate
notes and a hint of iodine. A stately body on the palate,
quite homogeneous and balanced, ripe but also firm acidity,
subtle sweetness and extract-supported. A structured
wine without harshness or astringency, but with substance.
Long finish. 12,5 Vol.-%, cork, €€
