Claus Burmeister demonstrates once
again how many facets there are to his
talent. Burmeister, who also vinifies the
wines at sister-estate Heitlinger, has presented
a really expressive, almost edgy range of wines
for the sometimes more traditional style of
Burg Ravensburg. We were particularly impressed
by the really fresh, silky and elegant
Grosses Gewächs of Lemberger (Blaufränkisch).
While this wine is called “Dicker Franz”,
i.e. fat Franz, there is absolutely nothing that is
sluggish or staid about it. Likewise, the white
wines also turned out well, the one from the
Kapellenberg site was our favourite.

Transparent pale yellow in colour, more open on the nose
than its counterpart from the Husarenkappe. Interesting:
The palate receives broad fruit, yet little pronounced fruitiness.
The acidity is striking with further development of
(herbal) spiciness. 12 Vol.-%. cork, €€€

Complex on the nose: slightly buttery, citrus aromas and delicate
hints of wood. Sparse on the palate, minerality and delicate
fruit are in balance. Still very young, should open up further
in the coming years. Decanting recommended.

91 2018 Sulzfeld Löchle Grauburgunder GG
Gorgeous, transparent copper in appearance. Light green
tones on the palate. Despite the sheltered, somewhat warmer
location, there is no trace of plumpness, very taut and almost
pithy. Delightful how delicately the fruit is integrated.

93 2015 Sulzfeld Dicker Franz
Blaufränkisch GG
Finely spicy aroma with hints of black cherry, incense and vanilla.
On the palate, power combines with animating acidity.
This wine also draws elegance from its silky tannins and the
remarkably long, harmonious finish. 13,5 Vol.-%. cork, €€€
92 2016 Sulzfeld Löchle Spätburgunder GG
This wine has opened up with time: On the palate, a melange
of black cherry, blackberry and redcurrants with a
hint of vanilla. Well-integrated wood, restrained tannins.
Juicy yet mineral, distinctive and a pleasant acidity.
