The Staatsweingut Freiburg (owned by the
Federal State of Baden Württemberg) has
presented four white Grosse Gewächse
from the 2018 vintage in one go, accompanied by
the Spätburgunder GGs from the vintages 2018,
2017 and 2013. The team around director Bernhard
Huber handled the 2018 vintage really well.
The wines are characterised by density, tension
and body. The Spätburgunder GG from the
Blankenhornsberger Doktorgarten is the best and
most remarkable expression of that. The 2013
vintage from the same site illustrates how deliciously
these wines can mature. If such an outlook
is not promising, we have no idea what is!

Chardonnay GG
Fragrant and slightly perfumed nose: pear, apricot and white
flowers. The firm palate structure is compelling, fine tannins
and phenolics, spicy and with good density and tension, dry
and without ingratiation.Good potential for ageing.

Grauburgunder GG
Discreet spicy wood, berryish Pinot notes and ripe fruity-citrus
aromas - tangerine. On the palate, a quite present layer of
phenolics, plus a tense acidic nerve in the background of a
powerful body. Needs time, has the best potential for spiciness.

Spätburgunder GG
Herbal-spicy fragrance, sour cherry, Pinot berries. Almost
menthol. Plump and supple on the palate, mellow tannins,
ripe acidity, translates the vintage into volume, but with juiciness
and good fruit accompaniment. Creamy finish.

Some sour cherry, cocoa powder, discreet wood, initial spicy
hints. On the palate, juicy onset, mellow tannins, sweet fruit,
weaves suppleness and substance into each other very nicely,
the tactile minerality carries for quite a long time and gives
the construction even more elegance. 13,5 Vol.-%. screwcap

Smells of blueberry muffin, liquorice, wild blueberry with
intense dark berry notes and hints of discreet wood. Fine,
fresh tannins, immediately present tactile minerality,
creamy background, mild acidity, which nevertheless offers
