The Isteiner Klotz is one of Germany’s
most impressive limestone formations,
where the vines root directly on pure,
white coral limestone – categorised geologically
as a Jurassic limestone. Two families, the
Kellers from Oberbergen and the Reineckers
from Auggen, bought this Weingut am Klotz
in 2019 and have run it together since. “Time
and again this terroir astonishes and enthuses
us,” says Friedrich Keller. New vineyards are
to be planted and there are plans for Sekt as
well as still wines. The very first vintage already
shows that great things are in store.

An intensely spicy smell rises from the glass. Roasted almond
and dried fig with a dash of orange zest. Minerality and
acidity on the palate are more or less on a par. The finish is
quite long and characterised by a chalky minerality.

However, a bit more density on the palate wouldn't hurt.

91 2018 Istein Spätburgunder trocken
Inviting nose with sour cherry, cardamom, peppery notes - reductive,
fresh, and fun. On the palate, it could almost have a
bit more extract. The tannin is discreet, the acidity a bit in the
background. Cool wine, one looks forward to what is still to

91 2018 »Kalk & Löss« Spätburgunder
Landwein trocken
A bouquet of ripe raspberries with intense sage aromas. On
the palate, it has a slightly rustic bitterness and a rather medium
acidity structure. A Spätburgunder with a strong character
and yet quite slender with clear mineral definition.

90 2018 Istein Cabernet Sauvignon trocken
Smells like roasted red peppers in the oven with the continuity
of making juice out of them. Sweet, spicy plus a hint of balsamic
vinegar and blackcurrant. Fine tannins, lean.
90 2019 »Kalk & Löss« Gutedel
Landwein trocken
Reminiscent of acacia honey on the nose with a hint of vine
peach, subtle also spicy scents with mineral undertones.
On the palate, lean and tightly-built, emphatically dry and
straightforward with a rather intense acidity and chalky
