A
few things are new at the Römerhof in
Riol: for one thing, there is a new wine
shop that joins architecture and the
pleasure of wine into a ravishingly sensuous
experience. Then there is a new grape variety
in the wine range: for the first time there is a
Sauvignon Blanc on offer. The wine from this
virgin vintage turned out so well that we immediately
turned it into our Falstaff-Tip. Last
but certainly not least, we can report that 2019
also delivered ripe, full-flavoured Riesling
grapes – ideal raw material for a thoroughbred
like the dry Auslese or the brilliant Beerenauslese.
92 2019 »Constantin« Mehringen Zellerberg
Riesling Auslese trocken
Ripe yellow fruit, apricot, peach, mango and some wood
scents. A luscious selection of fruit. Poised on the palate,
ample volume with good extract, some phenolics, but also
juiciness supported by ripe and firm acidity. A thoroughbred
Riesling with the best perspectives. 13 Vol.-%. cork, €€
91 2019 Longuich Maximiner Herrenberg
Riesling Auslese
At first closed, then a smoky and cool nose, followed by white
flowers and warm fur notes. On the palate a pleasant freshness
with notes of dill and plump acidity. A lovely taste of
lightly caramelised sugar forms the long finish.
8,5 Vol.-%. DIAM, €€
89 2019 »vom grauen Tonschiefer« Mehringen
Zellerberg Riesling Spätlese feinherb
92 2019 »131°« Mehringen Zellerberg
Riesling Beerenauslese
Light stone fruit on the nose, also mint, herbs, leafy greens, lemon
balm and citrusy notes; already playful on the nose. Good
freshness on the palate with great sweetness-acidity interplay,
complexity and concentration, juicy and animating in good balance.
A fresh citrus fruit note on the finish. 7,5 Vol.-%. cork, €€€
91 2019 »Alte Reben« Mehringen Zellerberg
Riesling Spätlese
Peach and mango, plump, ripe but very clear fruit scents. On
the palate, a dense Spätlese body with good structure,
poised, compact and juicy with a lively acidic nerve that refreshes
the fruit. The depth of the old vines is well depicted.
13 Vol.-%. DIAM, €€
90 2019 Sauvignon Blanc trocken
Peppery and spicy slate nuances on the nose, almost more
slate than Sauvignon Blanc! Full-bodied on the palate,
slightly salty, good body, ripe, fresh acidity, only subtly
sweet with smooth foundations. A good food wine.
12,5 Vol.-%, screwcap, €
