Johannes Jülg is exuberant and in top
form. Whenever we sent out tenders for
wine competitions, his wines were there
amongst the best. And you don’t even have to
grasp for his top wine “Opus Oscar” to have
something extraordinary in your glass. Jülg
has mastered that interplay between wood
and fruit like few others, the wines are vibrant
with density and tension. A noteworthy fact:
almost half of the vineyards lie across the border
on the French side. We can also recommend
the estate’s own Weinstube, or inn,
where down-to-earth Pfalz cuisine comes with
a touch of Francophile finesse.
94 2019 »Opus-Oskar« Chardonnay trocken
Burgundian on the nose. A bouquet of yellow apple, star fruit,
lemon zest and finest vanilla. On the palate violets, pear, hazelnut
and pineapple. Ideally balanced by very lively acidity.
The light phenolics bring a textural sensation. Has depth and
a very long finish. 13,5 Vol.-%. cork, €€€

Weissburgunder trocken 2019
Clear in the glass. Very precise on the nose; ripe pineapple,
peach, brioche and honeysuckle. Concentrated palate with
depth of flavours; wet stone, pear, lemon zest and ripe melon.
Perfectly integrated wood and a very long finish.

95 2018 Schweigen Kammerberg
Spätburgunder trocken
Medium ruby. Complex fragrance. Raspberry, sweet cherry,
violet and clove. The fine acidity balances the above aromas
as well as orange zest and hibiscus. Tension, power, ripe tannins
and a light minerality carry this distinguished wine into
a long finish. 13 Vol.-%. cork, €€€

Tar, dark berry, elderberry jam, ripe blackberry. On the palate
a powerful texture of finely gripping floury tannins, delicate
acidity, high fruit potential. Still largely closed, but hinting at
the complexity to come. 13 Vol.-%. cork, €€€€

Riesling trocken
Very fine and precise aromas of ripe pineapple, apple and
elderflower. The accentuated acidity accompanies the
complex aromatics, complemented by lime, grapefruit,
redcurrants leaf and flint flavours. Impressive, long finish.
