This 27ha/67 acre site of Triassic red
sandstone, almost completely terraced, is
emblematic for the Churfranken subregion.
Its relatively low altitude (120-230m /393-
754ft), its south-south-western to southwestern
aspect and extreme steepness, with
inclines of up to 85%, make it one of the
warmest in all of Franken.

STEIN-HARFE
Today the Stein is 71ha/175 acres large, the
Stein Harfe 7.7ha/19 acres. The good, classic
part of the vineyard has an incline of up to
75% whereas Harfe, a monopole owned by
the Bürgerspital, reaches inclines between
50-60%. The stony soils are of weathered
Triassic limestone.

“Pfülben” is a term for pillow and this one
clings to the undercut bank of the river Main.
Its south-west-facing parcels benefit from
the light reflection and heat retention of the
water. The slope turns south and south-southeast
into a lateral valley but not much further
than 400m from the river. Its 19ha/47 acres
have inclines between 30-70% and rise from
185-270m/610-885ft.

This site measures 43ha/106 acres and has
inclines of up to 75%. This slope, with its
countless terraces held in place by
12km/7.4 miles of dry stone walls, is a
geological curiosity: the transition between
the Triassic layers of red sandstone and
cream-coloured limestone runs right
through the vineyard.
