Who would have thought, even just a
few short years ago, that a Weissburgunder
from Weingut Maximin
Grünhaus could make us swoon? But this
is just what happened this year as we tasted
this uncommonly fine Pinot Blanc, made with
such finely felt intuition that slate elegance
was guided into Burgundian generosity. But
Maximin von Schubert, now at the helm of
this ancient, family-run estate, is also as
sure-footed in the core skill of this estate –
which is of course Riesling. All the dry wines
convinced us; the residually sweet ones enthused
us.
Riesling GG
Still closed on the nose, spicy-slate notes, herbal notes, dried
lemon peel with balsamic overtones. Supple onset, quite
broad, a delicate layer of phenolics, ripe acidity but still
seems reserved. Good prospects for spicy development.
12 Vol.-%. cork, €€€
label. Flint, fully ripe pineapple and citrus fruits on the nose,
then the full impact on the palate comes with exotic fruit
and viscosity. More like a Spätlese. 7,5 Vol.-%. cork, €€
Pinot Blanc trocken
A fine, floral varietal scent, some yeast and a hint of wood,
followed by nutty notes, some citrus and herbal aromas.
Roundly flowing on the palate, delicate phenolics, fineboned,
very cultivated acidity, a tactile mineral oscillation on
the finish. Pure delicacy. 13,5 Vol.-%. cork, €€€
95 2019 Maximin Grünhaus Herrenberg
Riesling Auslese
Grandiose aromas of honeydew melon, ripe peach and mirabelle
plum. Almost free of botrytis and in no way plump. Subtle
acidity, seemingly endless finish. A wine with ageing potential
for several decades, almost a work of art. 7,5 Vol.-%. cork, €€€
Riesling Kabinett
An unusually strong colour with pale golden yellow hues, already
indicates that there is more here than is written on the
90 2019 »Monopol« Maximin Grünhaus
Riesling trocken
Fresh and mineral on the nose, herbaceous notes with
hints of lime. Smooth onset, good juiciness, lively sweetness-acidity
interplay, both quite intense, but still with inner
harmony. Terpenic finish and full-bodied. Considering
the label "trocken" (dry), a rather mild Riesling.
12 Vol.-%, screwcap, €€
