Once again, the lively Max von Kunow
has a great vintage in his cellar. He
used the 2019 vintage to hone his idea
of light yet concentrated Saar Riesling further.
This year, it appears, that the slightly warmer
sites seem to come out ever so slightly on top:
the Kanzemer Hörecker – an enclave within
the Altenberg site – shines with its demanding,
beautiful extract in this “Grosse Lage” wine (it
has just a touch too much residual sugar to
pass as a dry GG) similarly to the profound
Spätlese. His Scharzhofberger Kabinett registers
at a comparably exalted level.

In the closed nose, aromas of flowers, apple, lemon peel, fine
smoke and a hint of warm stone emerge. Taut and compact
on the palate, tension and traction, clearly defined muscle,
also texture and juiciness. The fine minerality shows the

In the powerful nose, scents of stone fruit, grapefruit, apricot,
peach, yellow apple, flowers and herbs. Well built on the palate
with athletic power, juice and texture supported by good substance
and density with grapefruit notes. Good concentration
on the midpalate, mineral finish. 12,5 Vol.-%. cork, €€€

Integrated wild silky texture of lively smoky notes, herbal nuances,
stone dust, light fruit and herbs. Still slightly astringent
and phenolic on the palate with tart hints and bitter notes. Finely
sweet fruit, deep minerality. Needs time. 12,5 Vol.-%. cork
94 2019 Kanzem Hörecker Riesling Spätlese
On the nose delicate fruit, sweet pear, blossoms and fine
spiciness. Tightly woven on the palate, a calm balance, has
depth without heaviness. Creaminess and subtle power combined
with smoky minerality. Delicately chiselled acidic
structure that weaves itself into delicate sweetness.

92 2019 Niedermennig Riesling trocken
Some herbs and light yellow fruit, fine spices and a smoky
minerality. Clear and tightly woven on the palate, lots of
juice and fine phenolics, a finish with stone dust, notes of
apple, stone fruit and herbal nuances with a tender delicate
bitter note. 12 Vol.-%, cork, €€
