Georg Meier increasingly turns into a
specialist of taut, purist and minerally
expressive Rieslings that come with a
decent vein of acidity, some edginess and enormous
ageing potential. His “2G” Riesling
from the 2018 vintage, matured in a granite
vat, presents a whole lot of tension and still
comes across as youthful. The skin-fermented
Riesling “Schiefer” from 2018 shows all the
signs of an orange wine but in a most cultivated,
mineral fashion. His 20 hectares of vineyards
are now in conversion to organic farming.
The excitement continues in Weyher.

The ripe yellow fruit (apricot and peach) on the nose is joined
by stony notes, also spice and a little mint. Good tension on
the palate with traction and well judged power. Athletic stature,
the intense minerality provides character and profile. Individual

90 2019 Weyher Michelsberg Riesling trocken
91 2018 »Schiefer« Riesling Landwein trocken
Light amber in colour, with sage, dried apricot and subtle
malty notes on the nose, also wormwood. On the palate
there is less drive but plenty of content; ripe acidity, powerful
tannins and phenolics, good density and a mineral hue.

91 2018 Burrweiler Altenforst Riesling trocken
Fine, intricate nose with apricot and passion fruit, delicate
spice and smoke. Powerful and firmly structured on the palate
which does not rely on opulent fruit but on cool minerality;
juicy with fine phenolic layers. Purist and demanding.

90 2015 »Réserve« Hainfeld
Cabernet Sauvignon trocken
Dark aromas on the nose; leather, graphite, cassis, mint and
an ethereal tone. Powerfully built on the palate with forward
drive and a prominent, ripe tannin framework. Sour cherry to
the fore then black cherry and ripe plum, fine minerality.
Complex. 14 Vol.-%. cork, €€€
91 2018 Weyher Michelsberg Riesling tr.
A subtle yellow in the glass, notes of spontaneous fermentation,
rather ripe stone fruit and flashes of mineral. Texture
and power on the palate support the acid structure.
Compact construction, dry and with salty notes. No kitsch,
lots of substance and also minerality. 13,5 Vol.-%, cork, €€
