“Höhle“ (=cave) is derived from a small
mine while “Hermann” pays homage to
Hermes, messenger of the gods, to whom a
late-Roman shrine was dedicated on the
Lemberg, on whose slope the vineyard sits.

Volcanic soils characterise this site and its
wines. This incline of up to 60% steepness
is covered in the debris of the rocks that
overlook the vineyard and protect it from
northerly winds. The subsoil is of dark,
gritty loam. The south-southwest-facing
site rises between 125-200m/410-656ft
from the Nahe riverbank.
