The panoramic view from the terrace of
this winery in Hohenhaslach indeed
offers splendid views across vineyards,
fields and forests which is an awe-inspiring
sight. The wines presented by Reinhard
and Josua Baumgärtner for tasting this
year were just as diverse. The spectrum ranges
from a tropically yellow “Madeus B.” to a
varietally-typical Trollinger which disappears
from the glass far too quickly. All the
wines have a beautiful presence of fruit and a
very smooth, polished flow – some of the
wines, however, could be a little more edgy.
90 2018 »Madeus B.« trocken CH/RR/KR/PG
White blend, the main part Chardonnay, followed by Riesling,
Pinot Gris and Kerner. Ripe, yellow nose with tropical hints of
pineapple, quince and a dash of cinnamon; as colourful as
the spectrum of grape varieties. Ripe on the palate, viscous
and yellow-fruit nuances with a lot of texture and spiciness.

Lemon zest, yellow pear and linden blossom on the nose.
Dense and ripe matter, with a certain viscosity, yet also with
green aromas of lime and angelica. These two souls still
have to intermingle a little bit more. 13 Vol.-%. glass, €€€

Spätburgunder trocken
Intensely fragrant with raspberry and cherry-fruits and
smoky nuances, clearly recognisable as a German varietal.
Very slight lactic notes on the palate, fine wood and a very
smooth flow with additional wild strawberry and juniper
notes and restrained spiciness. 13 Vol.-%. glass, €€€
89 2017 »Mergelkies« Syrah trocken
Intense berry notes, black pepper and lots of clove hints on
the nose. On the palate, great fruit density with a medium
body and a salty touch. Not a typical broad, overripe example,
but extremely fruit-driven. 12,5 Vol.-%. glass, €€
89 2018 »Bunter Mergel« Trollinger trocken
Light coloured in the glass. Fresh scents of strawberry, red
plum and mint. Very calm on the palate, no aggressiveness,
nor too bold. Beautiful fruit and fine tannins. Well done for
the hot vintage, an ideal picnic wine.
