however, for the time being they are trying to
create the best possible conditions for
Riesling. Its future, she says, “lies in the
lateral valleys where the grapes are not
exposed to the intense midday sun.” She
adds that the Mittelrhein has learned from
the mistakes of the past: It was not even that
long ago that “Riesling was pushed aside in
favour of lesser varieties.” Quantity instead
of quality: this is a mistake nobody can afford
to repeat. In this respect there is
consensus in the Mittelrhein: “Riesling will
remain our great strength.”
