Birkweiler Kastanienbusch – one of the most famous sites
on the Südliche Weinstrasse

Limestone kilns used to stand on this site and
both calcareous marls and limestone debris
characterise this 5ha/12 acre vineyard. Its
situation on the warm mid slope and – somewhat
flat – southern aspect along with several
sandstone walls at its northern end create a
particularly mild meso climate. It brings forth
aromatically-layered and expressively mineral
wines.

This site is an island of reddish shale amidst the
Pfalz landscape usually so dominated by Triassic
red sandstone and limestone. But red sandstone
indeed crops up here, too, especially in the
higher-lying parcels which rise up to 300m/984ft.
