the warmest site on the Saar

The von Schubert family tends this 13.9ha/
34 acre site (as well as the 20ha/49 acres of
contiguous vineyards on either side of a slope
where vines have been grown presumably as
early as the fourth century. The conditions on
this knoll-shaped, up to 70% steep, site are
excellent. The weathered slate soils are not
too thin, so that the vines have sufficient
water availability even in dry summers. The
south-to-south east-facing slope ensures
plentiful sunshine.

This monopole has been in the hands of the
same family since 1811. The site covers
17.2ha/42 acres and has inclines between
40-50%. The site forms a knoll which
extends westwards from a prevailing
southern and south-eastern aspect. It rises
from 170-270m/557-885ft. The soils of
weathered Devonian slate have numerous
veins of iron. Karthäuserhof wines with
their iconic neck label are Ruwer classics
with racy acidity.

KANZEM | ALTENBERG
The breathtakingly-steep Altenberg
(inclines of up to 80%) has soils of greenish
slate, mixed with weathered rhyolite. Its
south-south-east aspect directly on the
river Saar ensures sufficient light and
warmth to bring forth powerful and
long-lived wines which often find their
most memorable expressions within the
Spätlese Prädikat. Fortunately, many
parcels of old, ungrafted vines could be
preserved here. The Kanzem site Hörecker
is an enclave within this vineyard.
