In February 2020, Maximilian Kusterer
was crowned “Newcomer of the Year” at
the Falstaff Wine Trophy. In July he took
over his family estate in Esslingen, but his parents
Monika and Hans Kusterer will of course
continue to work alongside him. Spätburgunder
is Kusterer’s passion and this year he presented
his 2018 Spätburgunder from the Esslinger
Neckarhalde for the first time, made
from Burgundy-sourced vines planted at a
density of 10,000 per hectare. Both vineyard
and vine look to the future and they are extremely
promising.

Quite dark for a Pinot and visibly unfiltered. On the nose, finely-translucent
fragrance under a blanket of eucalyptus and
wet stone. On the palate there is enormous acidity, cherry
fruit and a deliberately lean body. Potential, wait and see.

Perceptible tannins on the palate, deep fruit, ripe and robust
at the same time. If you are searching for easy-drinking
smoothness, you have to search elsewhere.

Very ripe black berry fruit on the powerful nose. On the palate,
however, it appears firmer. Distinctly piquant acidity
structure, well-integrated wood, a calm and elegant flow.
The pithiness typical of Blaufränkisch greets us from afar.

Ripe and dense aromas of black cherry, some graphite and a
hint of juniper. After the first sip, then the puzzled look at the
label: Is it really 14.5 percent alcohol by volume? Robust
matter that easily binds the power. Elderberry, perceptible

Zweigelt trocken
Dark purple in the glass. On the nose, a very dense black berry
presence that foreshadows the ripeness of the vintage.
92 2017 Esslingen Neckarhalde
Chardonnay trocken
Very fine nose and despite barrique-ageing no pretentious
wood notes at all. Cedar and pear cider tones on the palate,
kept very dense, but with the consistent acidity which runs
through the body of the wine. Supple and elegant, a reference
and recommendation in this price range.
