Weingut Kalkbödele was founded in
1978 by the Mathis brothers and
is run by Sonja Mathis today.
Manfred Zimmermann is both director and
cellar master, continuing the long tradition of
maturing wines in barrique with aplomb. This
winery was, after all, amongst Baden’s pioneers
of maturing wines in smaller oak barrels.
Kalkbödele, the estate’s name, refers to the
limestone reef of the Tuniberg subregion.
Right from the start the estate specialised in
red and white Pinot-varieties. Those looking
for wines rich in substance and chalky minerality
will not be disappointed.
90 2018 »Réserve« Chardonnay trocken
Strong lemon yellow, intense and spicy nose, toasted aromas
mixed with ripe fruit, pear and stone fruit. Broad and deep on
the palate, depicts the warm vintage with power and substance,
the alcohol binds well, charming heavyweight. Pairs
well with hearty food. 15 Vol.-%. cork, €€
89 2016 Pinot Noir trocken
90 2018 Pinot Gris trocken
Powerful aroma with oak spice, juniper berry, pear, quince,
blueberry, ripe pineapple and a hint of curry powder. Broad.
On the palate there is good substance and power, the ripe
and present acidity provides balance. Dry and spicy, no lightweight.

89 2017 »Mathis Cuvée Pinot Blanc« brut
Brioche, yeast pastry, apricot and white flowers on the nose,
also a hint of rose. On the palate, freshness, texture and
sweetness combine to a harmonious formula, juicy, not too
complex in its structure. A great aperitif that also goes well
with starters. 12,5 Vol.-%. cork, €€
90 2016 »Tradition« Spätburgunder trocken
Smoky ambience, rosehip, strawberry and wood spice.
Strong construction. On the palate there is substance and
power, well-woven acidity, strawberry notes again, slightly
jammy, the tannins are concise, distinctive, dry and unadorned.
Ideal for Sunday roast. 14 Vol.-%. cork, €€
90 2018 Pinot Blanc trocken
Ripe apricot is accompanied by fine herbs and wood spice
in a full bouquet. Also on the palate there is ripe fruit and
intensity, good substance, the lively acidity provides movement,
mineral spice underpins the middle of the palate. A
