Fred Prinz makes wines that translate the
conditions of the high-altitude sites of
Hallgarten according to the criteria of
good, organic practice. This results in wines
like the Jungfer Spätlese which will not fully
reveal itself for another two to three years. Its
dry counterpart will probably open up a little
earlier and also shows a little more depth. In
the mid segment we had two favourites this
year: the juicy estate Riesling and the Riesling
from Hendelberg that comes with an irresistible
sense of place: cool and taut with a fruity
core.
93 2019 Hallgarten Jungfer Riesling GG
Still closed on the nose, but with hints of citrusy fresh fruit,
herbal spice and smoky terroir. Supple and poised on the palate
at the beginning, then with delicious phenolics, refined
acidity and restrained sweetness. Extremely stylish!
13 Vol.-%, cork, €€€
89 2019 Hallgarten Riesling trocken
92 2019 Hallgarten Hendelberg Riesling tr.
Pomelo, floral notes, rosehip, blood orange. On the palate
there is an exciting structure, with a supple background and
a firm, intensely palpable mineral structure as a contrast.
Good extract, very nice balance, great future.
13 Vol.-%, cork, €€
91 2019 Hallgarten Frühernberg Riesling tr.
Apple, orange peel. Initially closed, then also more and more
yellow-fruit appears. Powerful on the palate, good volume,
firm acid backbone and a rather generous counterbalance of
sweetness. Compact and sturdy on the finish.
13 Vol.-%, cork, €€
92 2019 Hallgarten Jungfer Riesling Spätlese
Fragrant, floral, berries, a hint of blackcurrant, lemon blossom.
On the palate: very vivid sweetness and a counterbalance
of saltiness and steely acidity. For all its sweetness it is
fresh and mineral, compact and ultimately still very young.
8,5 Vol.-%, cork, €€€
90 2019 Riesling trocken
Vegetal, herbaceous. Well-proportioned on the palate, firm
acidity, medium density, fruit highlighted with a slight
sweetness. An emphatically "cool" estate Riesling that will
mature with more spice. 12 Vol.-%, screwcap, €
