Weingut Karl Stein was founded in
1801 and is run today by Edith
and Rainer Schneider. Riesling
dominates and represents 85% of plantings,
with a third of their 13 hectares of vineyards
situated on steep sites with old vines. Their
best sites include Niederhäuser Klamm and
Felsensteyer as well as Oberhäuser Leistenberg,
Kieselberg and Felsenberg. We were really
impressed by this very homogenous range
of wines, especially by the concentrated and
mineral Riesling Felstensteyer. In the future,
there will also be a redoubled focus on Sekt.
Things are happening in Oberhausen!
91 2019 Niederhausen Felsensteyer
Riesling trocken
Fragrant aromatics of ripe peach and papaya, mineral notes,
slightly ethereal and red apple. Powerful on the palate with a
juicy body and good substance. Dense and rich in extract, yet
velvety, rather mild acidity, permeated by minerality, young.
13,5 Vol.-%. screwcap, €€
generous in its portions, the rather mild acidity binds well,
mellow phenolics on the mid palate. Mineral finesse on the
finish. 8 Vol.-%. screwcap, €€
89 2017 »Cuvee Stein« brut
89 2019 »Blitz« Silvaner trocken
Ripe apple and herbs show on the nose, also pear, tart pear
peel and some rosehip. On the palate there is striking tartness
and juicy acidity in a lean and compact body. Clear, juicy
apple notes, slightly mealy phenolics, great with food!
12 Vol.-%. screwcap, €
91 2019 Niederhausen Klamm
Riesling Spätlese
Fine Mirabelle plum and apricot, caramel and some baked
apple. Sightly viscous palate, creamy and sweet, concentrated
juice with apricot, apple and well-balanced salted caramel.
Ripe acidity, good balance and fine, smooth flow. Mineral,
charming. 8 Vol.-%. screwcap, €
90 2019 Niederhausen Felsensteyer
Riesling Auslese
Fine nose with tangerine and nectarine, some mint and mineral
hints, warm stone. Good concentration on the palate,
89 2019 »#stayhome« Riesling trocken
Apple and a little leafy green are joined by yellow-fruited
and spicy notes. Sweet fruit and ripe acidity open up in interplay
on the palate. A slender and straightforward construction,
offers a lot of drinking pleasure and shows the
typicity and advantages of the grape variety in the entry-level
range. 12,5 Vol.-%, screwcap, €
