Very gradually, showing off with the
Staatlicher Hofkeller wines becomes a
distinct possibility again. After several
changes at the helm, this giant tanker is once
again on a clearly defined course: aiming for the
most direct route towards the kind of site expression
that does justice to Franken’s diversity. Of
course, with a harvest of 120 hectares you cannot
perform as light-footedly as a fleet of tugboats in
the harbour – but the wines from the cellar underneath
the Würzburger Residenz certainly
have enough mettle for a proper cruise on the river
Main. New discoveries, like the Riesling from
the Hörsteiner Abtsberg site, prove as much.

Closed in fragrance, slightly smoky, citrusy and herbaceous
hints. On the palate powerful, dense, present but ripe acidity,
rests well within itself, with nuanced extract, good composition
and pleasant aromatic length. A fine spicy finish.

Tannic apple on the nose, also pear and dried apricot, plus
meadow herbs. Powerfully built. On the palate there is good
substance and also extract, mild and restrained acidity, again
ripe fruit and good spice. Consistent and coherent and could

Ripe mirabelle plums on the nose, floral notes, almonds,
some mango and smoky notes. On the palate there is good
substance, ripe acidity, medium complexity, somewhat vegetal,
dry and coherently structured. Medium density and

Spätburgunder GG
Herbs, morello and Amarena cherry, smoke and coffee notes.
Substantial on the palate with good substance, also juice
and texture, but also a dry with a purist focus; the tannins are
strong and currently somewhat astringent. Still seems
young, can mature. 13,5 Vol.-%. cork, €€€

Closed fragrance albeit slight scents of lemon balm, peach
stone and some mineral and fiery undertones. Firm onset
with good density, pithy acidity. A hearty very dry Riesling
that shows the minerality of the Hörsteiner vineyards.
