Thomas Pfaffmann sent us a series of
reds from the 2017 vintage that left us
nonplussed, impressed and enthused.
This was already evident in the exquisite entry-level
Spätburgunders and lasted all the
way to the single-site Pinots from Goldberg,
Burgweg and Geisberg. The profound Portugieser
from a parcel planted in 1931, is unique
and individual and an advertisement for this
forgotten variety. We already knew, of course,
that Pfaffmann also has a talent for white
wines (and Sekt) – this year we crowned the
sprightly estate Riesling as our favourite.
94 2017 Bissersheim Geisberg
Spätburgunder trocken
Dark berries, blueberry, ethereal overtones. Complex. The
commanding palate exhibits extensive fine tannins, densely
staggered extract layers and ripe acidity, but for all its intensity
it is also sophisticated and fine. Begins to unfold in the
glass, great ageing potential. 13 Vol.-%. cork, €€€€
93 2017 »HW31 Réserve« Portugieser trocken
Discreet wood, some wild plum, menthol, sour cherry, camphor.
Creamy on the nose, a strong dose of grainy tannin, intense
chalky minerality, taut tannin structure, noticeable
warmth, but also texture and fruit. Very individual and certainly
long-lasting. 13,5 Vol.-%. cork, €€€
93 2017 Grosskarlbach Burgweg
Spätburgunder trocken
Elderberry, resin, leafy green. The palate opens softly with
slowly increasing, very fine-grained tannins. Mild acidity,
creamy background, ripe fruit. An opulent Pinot style, but
one with a lot of depth. 13,5 Vol.-%. cork, €€€
92 2017 Bissersheim Goldberg
Spätburgunder trocken
Herbal spice, sage, fresh cherry, pepper and caramel. On the
palate there is drive, fine-grained tannin, ripe acidity and a
supple, smooth finish. A full-bodied yet well constructed Pinot.
13,5 Vol.-%. cork, €€€
90 2019 »Tertiär« Sauvignon Blanc trocken
90 2019 »Tertiär«
Chardonnay & Weissburgunder trocken
89 2019 »Tertiär« Grauburgunder trocken
89 2019 »Fundament« Rosé trocken
92 2017 »Réserve« St. Laurent trocken
90 2017 »Tertiär« Spätburgunder trocken
90 2017 »Kalkmergel« Bissersheim
Spätburgunder trocken
89 2019 »Fundament« Riesling trocken
Lemon balm and rosemary, floral, fragrant, very clear. On
the palate juicy, light to medium weight in extract and
body, lively acidity, pleasantly dry and yet not rough or
hard. A stylish Riesling for everyday life.
12,5 Vol.-%, screwcap, €
