Even if Benedikt Baltes returned to the
Ahr after a decade at the helm, and the
former Weingut der Stadt Klingenberg
was renamed Steintal, continuity is a given.
Baltes is still responsible for winemaking – but
of course there are changes as well: the current
name Steintal refers to the red sandstone soils
in the listed vineyard terraces of Klingenberg.
The kingfisher as an emblem stands for ecological
farming in tune with nature. The
Hundsrück Spätburgunder is one of Franken’s
and Germany’s best.

Complex and spicy aromas of cherry, gingerbread, lovage,
fine spice and hints of smoke. Good balance on the palate
with fine-nerved acidity, does not score with force and power,
but with well-packaged intensity. A long and mineral essenced
finish. 12,5 Vol.-%. cork, €€€€

Some yeast on the nose, dark berry fruit, elderberry jam, ripe
fruits and toasty tones. impressive on the palate, fleshy tannins,
strong tactile mineral components, ripe acidity, ample
fullness and an intensely juicy finish. Excellent Ortswein.

Ample smoke, wood spice and yeast on the nose with herbs
like lovage and notes of dark cherry and mulberry. Impressive
on the palate with density and tension, a clearly defined powerhouse,
uncompromising in its youth, pervaded by minerality,
great potential. 12,5 Vol.-%. cork, €€€€

Spätburgunder GG
Smoky aroma followed by herbs, toasted aromas, cherry and
rosehip. Straightforward on the palate with good freshness
and confident acidity, purist and dry, with grippy tannins,
slight astringency, sour cherry essence. Good substance and
minerality. 12,5 Vol.-%. cork, €€€€
91 2018 »Buntsandstein« Spätburgunder tr.
Wild cherry and milk chocolate, fragrant, perfectly ripe
fruit. On the palate there is verve in medium weight, mellow-grainy
tannins, ripe acidity, mineral notes. This wine
portrays the label perfectly - Pinot Noir from Buntsandstein.
