Kai Schätzel started as a young rebel and
now, at a more mature age, still carries
that fire of innovative power. His
wines, like “Fuchs” from the Niersteiner Hipping
site in 2018 say as much. Since it is classified
as a Landwein, it is not allowed to carry a
site name on the label – yet what is in the glass
is amongst the finest and most elaborate
skin-fermented white wines Germany has ever
seen. Compelling but not verging into extremes,
it leaves space for nuance despite all its
power. We cannot wait to see what will happen
next.

Riesling Landwein trocken
Highly complex on the nose driven by freshly-picked fruit,
cooked apple compote, kumquat, floral, lavender and a "wild"
note indicating spontaneous fermentation on the palate.

95 2019 Nierstein Pettenthal Riesling GG
Uninhibited nose with vegetal hints, dark aromas with hops
and malt. On the palate, Pettenthal is slender and taut, uncompromising
and tightly compact, the fresh acidity accompanies
yellow fruit, it never becomes too broad or fat.

As usual with Kai Schätzel, the successfully-mastered spontaneous
fermentation shows first: herbal, malty, behind it
also apple and some yellow fruit. The palate is salty with agile
acidity, lean and tightly-built, juicy and provocative, lots of
potential. 11,5 Vol.-%. cork, €€€

Rosehip and herbs on the nose, wood spice and smoke, nutty
aromas, then apricot. Juicy yellow fruit on the palate,
taut texture, perfectly balanced density and phenolic
notes, salty and uncompromising, yet elegant.

Pale lemon yellow. Very fine nose with primary scents of
mango and lime, complemented by a flint note. On the palate
intense flavours of lime zest, peach and a light salty
texture. Medium body, intense acidity and exciting finish.
