At Jürgen Bähr’s winery you really do
get a lot of wine for your money. When
wines with real site character go for
less than ten Euros, it is not only bargain hunters
who prick their ears up but wine lovers,
too. The Weilberg Riesling with its savoury
spice from terra rossa soils is the primus inter
pares amongst a whole range of successful
Rieslings. We also liked Bähr’s idea to vinify
his Chardonnay with less wood. Even his rather
gluggable Auslese of Huxelrebe and his excursion
into sweetness are convincing (simply
because they are not cloying).

Riesling Auslese trocken
Pomelo and grapefruit, blood orange and lemon balm. Complex,
with just a faint hint of overripeness. Massive on the palate, with
very fine phenolics, silky, lively acidity, lots of juice and fruit, controlled
power, good substance and length. 14 Vol.-%. DIAM, €

Riesling Spätlese trocken
Rather restrained on the nose, yellow-fruit and tangerine. On
the palate there is fiery acidity and terpenes (linalool, geraniol).
The wine is quite compact yet powerful, with elegant,
medium-weight fruit, mineral notes and a distinctive extract,
rich. Still closed. 13 Vol.-%. DIAM, €

Chardonnay Spätlese trocken
Floral, herbal-spicy, very fresh on the nose and clear. The palate
shows freshly roasted corn cakes with some texture and a
fine acidity. Discreet minerality and fine spicy wood on the finish.
A balanced Chardonnay with a restrained wood influence.

Huxelrebe Auslese
Concentrated botrytis fruit, candied aromas, good clarity
and freshness. On the palate there is crunchy acidity, subtle
viscosity, a rather restrained sweetness, distinct mineral
notes and medium-weight extract. Not over-concentrated
and thick. 9 Vol.-%. DIAM, €

Quite powerful, also terroir-spiced nose, peach, red apple,
iron. On the palate there is substance and fullness, with
good mineral extract, arrow-like acidity and very good
freshness. The impression is almost light-footed, but in a
