In 2019, as in previous years, Jochen
Ratzenberger proved himself to be a master
across all classes and categories of
Riesling: his spectrum encompasses everything
from an elated, off-dry Kabinett via expressive,
dry Rieslings all the way to nobly sweet
rarities – while his enlivening Sekt “Pinot”
from 2015 absolutely deserves mention. The
magnificently dry Riesling “St. Jost” shows
wonderful density and yet remains slender. It is
only surpassed by the exquisite Beerenauslese
from the same site which enthuses with its
concentrated yet subtle and refined style.

Some damp stone and ripe yellow apple on the nose. On the
palate there follows a nice, mineral tension. Aromatic density
with tones of mirabelle plum and dried apricot. The acidity
contributes to a wonderful, dense overall impression.

Smoky notes on the nose with stone fruit and apple. Taut and
compact on the palate with creamy substance, full-bodied
and juicy with a slender body supported by ripe acidity with a
fine mousse. The wine depicts the terroir of Bacharach and
the fine slate notes. 13 Vol.-%. cork, €€
95 2019 Steeg St. Jost Riesling Beerenauslese
Concentrated citrus fruit, candied lemon peel, quince, some
slate, white pepper and hints of clear but distinct botrytis. On
the palate slender and juicy, built entirely on elegance, nuances
of pear and white currant too. A very subtle and refined
wine. 7,5 Vol.-%. cork, €€€
93 2019 Bacharach Wolfshöhle Riesling Auslese
Medium ruby. Exciting nose of cool smoke, nobly-ripe cherries
and ripe raspberries. On the palate, the perfectly-integrated
acidity cushions the afore mentioned flavours, complemented
by a light herbal note. The medium body ends in a
long finish, finely crafted. 8 Vol.-%. cork, €€€

Very delicate tones of green apple on the nose. Wonderfully
fresh, animating acidity that goes very well with the subtle
aromatics. The typical local minerality blends in wonderfully.
An Ortswein with a wonderful flow that is simply a
