If the term “cross-border-commuter” is apt
for a winemaker, then it’s Gerd Bernhart.
Two thirds of this estate’s vineyards are
located in Alsace. On the southern edge of the
Pfälzer Wald, Bernhart utilizes the various soil
types for different grape varieties: Calcareous
marl makes for mineral Weiss- and Grauburgunders
as well as profound Spätburgunders.
Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are
planted on the sandier parcels. We were particularly
convinced by the Pinot varieties. The
Spätburgunder Sonnenberg “KT” an absolutely
outstanding Pinot Noir - made in the
Pfalz.

Apple and ripe citrus fruit on the nose, almonds, pear, floral
notes and spice. On the palate there is good balance, ripe
fruit, texture and juice. Evolves showing good substance,
density and fine minerality; elegant and consistent. Good potential.

Somewhat peppery on the nose, salted peanut, lime, also red
berry, honeydew melon, blossom honey. Substantial, powerful
palate with a dense acid core. Striking tension in a robust
body - the finish is fresh and herbaceous. 13,5 Vol.-%. cork, €€

Medium cherry red, light reflections at the rim. On the nose
plenty of spice, tobacco, leather, ripe cherry, shattered rock,
herbal spice, smoke. On the palate red fruits, cherry, texture,
finely chiselled tannins - nice stature. Very Burgundian, good
length. 13 Vol.-%. cork, €€€

Clear, rich red, light red reflections at the rim. On the palate
powerful cherry, spice, smoke, blackberry, redcurrants.
Dense and spicy. Dense on the palate, red fruits, cherry again,
spices, lots of texture. Finely woven and long. Very elegant.

Rich, clear yellow. On the nose smoke, shattered rock, fine
vanilla and herbal spice all underpinned with fine minerality.
Finely balanced acidity on the palate, lime zest, smoke
and toast, yellow fruits. Lots of tension, still needs time.
