Matthias and Stefanie Buchert who run
their five-hectare estate in Neustadt
an der Weinstrasse together, do not
seem to care much for convention. Quite a number
of their wines are idiosyncratic in the best
sense of the word. Like their Riesling “Holz 18”
which unites noticeable sweetness and palpable
wood influence which prompted one of our tasters
to note down “sommelier wine”. Likewise,
their rosé “Holz 18”, with its woody spice and
real substance does not really comply with the
cliché of an easy-drinking rosé. We also liked the
red blend “Cuvée 14” with its powerful tannins,
which would be perfect alongside Osso Buco.
90 2018 »Holz 18« Riesling
Deep yellow, ripe stone fruit and wood notes, some pineapple.
Unusual Riesling with taut acidity and noticeable residual
sweetness, also strong wood influence. Firm in structure,
juicy and spicy, underpinned by a confident acidity. A sommelier

89 2018 »Holz 18« Rosé Merlot trocken
Unusual rosé from Merlot which was matured in barrique.
Powerful aroma of wood spice and toasted aromas, roasted
coffee beans and wild strawberry. Powerfully built on the
palate, not a summer wine, has enough substance to accompany
dishes with strong aromas. 13,5 Vol.-%. screwcap, €€
90 2014 »Cuvée 14« trocken CS/SY/CF/ME/CI
Cassis and cherry on the nose, blood orange and sage. Fine
ripe aromas, balsamic spice. Powerful and compact on the
palate, robust tannin structure, a peppery spiciness, elderberry,
fruity nuances and also freshness. A bold wine for winter
evenings or strong flavoured dishes.

89 2013 Spätburgunder trocken
Slightly matured on the nose; balsamic spice, herbs, lovage,
dark chocolate and cherry in kirsch, dark aromas, allspice,
damp forest floor. Vivid acidity on the palate, powerful in
structure with prominent tannins. Slightly drying, still fresh.

89 2019 »Knallweiss 19« SC/CB
Sauvignac and Cabernet Blanc are the blend “Knallweiss
19”. Spicy nose with citrus notes, lime zest and candied orange
zest, yellow flowers. On the palate the vivid acidity initially
dominates but the clear and sweet fruit is well balanced
with lots of spice. 13 Vol.-%, screwcap, €
