To get straight to the point: Erni Loosen’s
2019 vintage is brilliant. The “Blauschiefer”
already is a hit, or rather: it
shows the kind of finesse that you do not usually
expect from an estate Riesling. Our tasting
jury used the term “style icon” to describe the
Würzgarten Kabinett. When it came to the
Spät- and Auslesen it was hard to differentiate
scores – the wines are just so harmonious and
rest within themselves to such a degree that
mere numbers dissolve into hollow smoke.
Thus Loosen’s wines continue on their path to
greatness – onto the striking dry and noble
sweet wines from the Erdener Prälat site.
95 2014 »Réserve« Erden Prälat Riesling GG
Lemon yellow with greenish reflections. Complex spiciness
on the nose; warm brick, cumin, tikka masala. Smooth and
full on the palate, an iron fist in a velvet glove but finishing
gently with a delicate thread of acidity and subtle mineral
spiciness. 12,5 Vol.-%. cork, €€€€

Riesling GG
Yellow fruit like apricot and peach meet slate spice and citrus
with Amalfi lemon scents followed by white flowers and
a hint of cinnamon. Solid acidity, slightly salty and citric underlay
meets fine yellow fruit, juice and suppleness. Clear
profile that depicts the site. 12,5 Vol.-%. cork, €€€

Wherever it says “Würzgarten” on the label, Erni Loosen puts it
in the bottle too; intense herbaceous nose underpinned by yellow
fruit and mineral hints. Full-bodied, juicy and discreetly
sweet on the palate, finely peppery and gingery with minerality
too. Will mature well, good potential. 12,5 Vol.-%. cork, €€€

Riesling Auslese
Fresh fragrant nose of honey and hay, citrus fruit, linden blossom
and hints of herbs like thyme. On the palate a wonderfully
deep acidity, plump yet light as a feather, highly elegant
creaminess, exotic fruits like passion fruit. Incredibly cool,
delicate sweetness. 8 Vol.-%. cork, €€€€
