Schloss Frankenberg is a rare treasure,
not roused from its deep slumber until
2014. Apparently an eight-figure sum
was required to knock both the building and
farmsteads back into shape. Vineyards and
cellar, however, are already in working order
and the most attractive debut wine range presented
indeed proves the potential of the sites
surrounding the Schloss. These wines were not
made to look pretty in the short term but show
a stylistically well-thought-out philosophy:
bone-dry ‘fränkisch trocken’ with the accent
on terroir.

Yeasty notes, bitter almond, dried flowers superseded by citrus
fruits with air contact, bergamot and some flint. Discreetly
phenolic on the palate, firm acidity, finely fruity without
becoming unpleasantly overpowering. Persistent aromas
and structure harmonise on the palate.

Ripe, deep varietal aromas of earthy notes, sesame and valerian.
Almost chalky in texture on the palate, with a fine,
length-giving acid structure. A layer of mild phenolics and a
compact, closed finish. Solid construction with excellent potential.

90 2019 Weissburgunder trocken
White flowers, spring meadows and smoky terroir notes.
Quite powerful on the palate, good volume, firm acidic backbone,
quite dry but still pronounced in fruit. A gastronomic
style of Pinot Blanc that will go well with poultry and fish.

A very clear Gewürztraminer balancing fruit and spice.
Scents of rose, pear and candied fruits. Full-bodied and supple
on the palate, lively acidity, medium-weight extract, dry

89 2019 Silvaner trocken
Ample limestone on the nose. Restrained varietal spiciness
with slight balsamic notes in the background. Supple
and full on the palate with a firm acidic backbone and an
appropriate dry balance. A hearty wine full of character.
