Kessler, a proper family-trio, now<br />

work together at this farm that lies<br />

picturesquely at the foot of the Münzberg.<br />

Over the past years, the estate has strengthened<br />

its profile for Pinot varieties and that trajectory<br />

continues. Their Weissburgunders now<br />

have less Pfalz roundness than before while<br />

the Chardonnays almost have something ascetic<br />

abut them now. This year, we were also<br />

most impressed with the Spätburgunders<br />

which combine textured depth with elegance<br />

and have beautifully layered aromas. This estate<br />

is now on our watchlist for a fourth star.<br />

Chardonnay Erste Lage trocken<br />

Medium golden yellow. Intense on the nose; a scent of brioche,<br />

vanilla, lemon zest, pineapple and ripe yellow apple. The tangy<br />

acidity balances additional flavours of pineapple and star fruit.<br />

Complex, juicy and with a very good finish. 13,5 Vol.-%. cork, €€€<br />

Grauburgunder Erste Lage trocken<br />

Cream coloured with a reddish shimmer. Beguilingly berry-like<br />

on the nose. Blueberry, wild raspberry, fine phenolics<br />

on the palate, creamy, delicate texture, supporting the delicate<br />

but long-lasting acidity. Substantial and gentle in style<br />

with radiant fruit on the finish. 13,5 Vol.-%. cork, €€<br />

Schlangenpfiff Spätburgunder GG<br />

Mint on the nose plus cherries and blueberries, smoke, herbs<br />

and spices. Textured and juicy on the palate, the ripe acidity<br />

carries through the powerfully built body. Emphatically dry,<br />

powerfully extracted tannins. Still slightly astringent, good<br />

ageing potential. 13,5 Vol.-%. cork, €€€<br />

Spätburgunder Erste Lage trocken<br />

A very complex Pinot Noir! Aromas of fresh raspberries and<br />

pine needles combined with a slight resinous note. Its acidity<br />

is fresh and yet very well integrated. A very elegant and fresh<br />

Pinot with extremely persistent minerality.<br />

Lemon yellow in the glass. Fine fragrance of pineapple,<br />

ripe apple and vanilla. On the palate there are further complex<br />

flavours of lemon zest, apricot, brioche and chalk all<br />

balanced by a lively acidity. Slightly phenolic but very good<br />

finish. 13,5 Vol.-%, cork, €€<br />
