The Stauffer family farms seventeen hectares
of vines in limestone-rich sites
around Flomborn and Eppelsheim –
with some parcels of up to 80-year-old vines.
“In August 2018 we started the conversion to
organic viticulture,” cellar master Alexander
Stauffer reports. He presented an ambitious
and well-priced range of wines. His Riesling
“Kalkstein” already gives rather precise information
about its provenance in the glass. Its
wood-matured counterpart from the Feuerberg
shows complexity while the Sauvignon
Blanc trumps with finesse. Strong performance!

Gooseberry and ripe peppers on the nose, underpinned by
fine smoke. On the palate there is a sensitive balance of
the elements, the proportions are right, ripe acidity, firm
structure, elegant and finely-crafted.

90 2017 Flomborn Feuerberg Riesling trocken
A fine Riesling, characterised by ageing in wood alongside
smoky notes, toasty aromas, pear and herbal notes. Strong
and firm construction, a little fruit, structurally marked and
with a mineral base, defined acid structure, pithy on the finish.

90 2019 Eppelsheim Felsen Chardonnay tr.
Pear and melon on the nose, green walnut, light notes of honey,
fine wood spice, and hints of smoke. Supple on the palate
with complex layers of good spice, ripe acidity and mineral
appeal. Phenolic tartness, medium density, finishes with
herbal notes. 13 Vol.-%. screwcap, €€
89 2019 Eppelsheim Auxerrois trocken
Ripe fruit on the nose, Reine Claude plum, yellow flowers,
spice and smoke. Opens smoothly on the palate with mild
acidity and intense spice. Fine sweetness nestles delicately,
a finely-balanced wine that reveals a lot in the finish.

89 2019 »Kalkgestein« Riesling
Green gooseberry on the nose, Mirabelle, herbs and fine
spicy nuances. Fruity and playful Riesling with a vivid and
ripe acidity, nice spiciness, slender, with a texture and calm
charisma, limestone mineral notes on the finish.
