Si hanno così 2264 anni (3624-1360) per i dieci patriarchi antidiluviani e 1070 per quelli postdiluviani, fino alla nascita di Abramo. Ciò è quanto si credeva nel II secolo a.C. Scaliger, uno dei difensori della cronologia masoretica nel XVI secolo, riconosceva che la cifra di 5500 anni «era allora un pensiero riconosciuto in tutto il mondo» (Prologo in Cronologia, Eusebio). Riepilogando i principali scrittori greci, ebraici e cristiani che hanno affrontato il problema sono: Demetrio di Falera 5671; Eupnoleme 5507; Polistore 5600; Clemente Alessandrino e Giulio l’Africano 5500; Origene 5506; Teofilo di Antiochia 5515. Già Agostino (La Città di Dio, XV,13) sembra che sia il primo ad avere compreso che ci sia stato un cambiamento volontario e sistematico delle cifre degli anni. Oltre alla comparazione le prove che il testo Masoretico abbia subito delle correzioni sono: 1. Soppressione del patriarca postdiluviano Cainam, figlio di Arpacshad Con questo patriarca non si può giungere ai 5500 anni al tempo di Gesù. Cainam è citato dal padre della Chiesa del II secolo, tra cui Epifanio (Haeres, LXVI,83) e da altri, come figlio di Arpacshad padre di Scelah. Lo stesso Luca nel suo evangelo (3:36) lo elenca tra i patriarchi. (12)
