6. Check for LOS, Blue, Yellow, <strong>and</strong> Red alarms on the on-line reference facility, <strong>and</strong> fix those<br />

problems first. Check for slips, misframes, minor <strong>and</strong> major <strong>error</strong> rates <strong>and</strong> fix those<br />

problems next. See the DS1-BD <strong>and</strong>/or UDS1-BD for the <strong>error</strong> log entries associated with<br />

the previously mentioned alarms. Replace the circuit packs one at a time <strong>and</strong> wait at least<br />

1 hour to determine if the problem went away. This procedure is disruptive <strong>and</strong> should be<br />

done after hours if possible.<br />

If problems persist it may be useful to compare translations for line coding <strong>and</strong> frame<br />

formats with the far end service provider. Make sure the translations match.<br />

If high or critical reliability switch the Port Network Connectivity (PNC) to try <strong>and</strong> help<br />

isolate the problem.<br />

Instead of replacing the Tone-Clock circuit pack in systems where Tone-Clocks are<br />

duplicated, run set tone-clock to interchange Tone-Clocks. If the problem goes away,<br />

replace the previously active Tone-Clock.<br />

7. If a few facilities experience slips or are unusable references, the clock source for facilities<br />

with slips or that are unusable is not traceable to the same ultimate source as the clock<br />

source for the on-line reference facility.<br />

Examine the overall timing network for the interconnected DS1 to determine if the:<br />

● Clock can be traced back to a single source.<br />

● Reference designations for each location in the distribution of timing is supplied in<br />

accordance with a synchronization plan.<br />

Examine the capability of the external transmission equipment to pass or provide timing.<br />

Verify the integrity of the on-site hardware by using Facility Fault Sectionalization. This:<br />

● Loops the transmit signal to the receive signal.<br />

● Verifies that the excessive slips or the unusable reference are no longer observed.<br />

This is a time-consuming process that disrupts service. Perform it after hours if the service<br />

provided by the system is acceptable as determined by the customer.<br />

8. For a high- or critical-reliability (duplex) system, use set tone-clock to interchange<br />

IPSI circuit packs’ Tone-Clock circuits or Tone Clock circuit packs, as applicable. If slips go<br />

away, replace the previously active Tone-Clock or IPSI circuit pack.<br />

For a st<strong>and</strong>ard reliability (simplex) system, change the tone clock.<br />

9. Use list fiber-links to determine the EIs on the active PN <strong>and</strong> the EIs associated<br />

with the slave PN. If the switch does not have duplication, the EIs are all on the active PN.<br />
