A key factor contributing to successful verbal and non-verbal interpersonal
communication between humans is interpersonal trust. Rotter (1967) defined
interpersonal trust as “an expectancy held by an individual or a group that the
word, promise, or verbal or written statement of another individual or group can
be relied upon”. Interpersonal trust has three primary components:
dependability, predictability, and faith (Rempel, Holmes, & Zanna, 1985).
incompletas.
Empathy, like trust, also relies heavily on the communication of these verbal and
non-verbal components (Ickes, Stinson, Bissonnette, & Garcia, 1990). Ickes
(1993) described empathy as being able to infer the thoughts and feelings of
others and then developing a similar response that is compassionate to what the
other person is feeling. Trust and empathy are closely related. Perceptions of
another person’s empathic reactions have been shown to lead to higher levels of
trust toward that person……..
Empathic accuracy, the first of two components of empathy, refers to the ability
to infer, with reasonable accuracy, what someone else is thinking and feeling
(Ickes, 1993)…. Once a person makes a reasonably accurate inference as to
what the other person is thinking or feeling, a similar feeling may develop. This
second component of empathy is supportive response, or “responding
compassionately to another person’s distress” (Coke, Batson, & McDavis, 1978).
