Antecedentes históricos del Síndrome de Down
Aunque existe la interrogante de cuándo apareció el Síndrome de Down, el dato
antropológico más antiguo que se conoce tiene su origen en el hallazgo de un cráneo sajón
que se remonta al siglo VII D.C. En él se observan alteraciones en la estructura ósea,
idénticas a las que suelen presentar las personas con este padecimiento. De igual forma, se
cree que algunas representaciones esculturales del pasado poseían esta alteración, tal es el
caso de las figurillas de barro y de las colosales cabezas realizadas en piedra, pertenecientes
a la cultura olmeca, que datan de hace aproximadamente 3,000 años; sin embargo, no hay
datos suficientes que apoyen esta hipótesis.
Las primeras ilustraciones de individuos con Síndrome de Down, de que se tiene
conocimiento, se encontraron en un altar que data del año 1505. Con base en las pinturas de
la época, es probable que este Síndrome se haya identificado antes del siglo XVI.
Igualmente se representó a un niño con rasgos que sugieren que tenía este mal, al menos así
lo muestra el cuadro: “La Virgen y el Niño”.
En la Comarca Lagunera se crea hace 22 años, la Fundación Down de la Laguna A.C. ante
la necesidad de aportar soluciones efectivas para las personas con síndrome de Down,
siendo pionera en el cambio de actitud hacia las personas con este síndrome, adoptó el
modelo de integración, (ahora llamado Inclusión) que trata de que los niños se integren a
sus familias, a los colegios, a la sociedad y la meta es llegar a la integración total dentro del
ámbito laboral, en donde estos niños y jóvenes sean autosuficientes y se sientan parte
funcional de la sociedad. Esta asociación se propuso apoyar a todos los niños sin importar
su condición social, es por esto, que se sostienen con base en donativos y benefactores. A la
